Cold Creek Furniture Company is offering distinctive reproduction frontier style bread boxes for your consideration.

Original bread boxes of this type were used by pioneer settlers beginning around 1810, east of the Mississippi; staying with folks as they made their way west. These boxes were especially popular in the Dakota’s and Kansas where they were referred to as “biscuit boxes”.

Original punch patterns ranged from random punching and simple designs to the more ornate patterns such as our diamond or rosette patterns. In practical use, the original boxes left the sharp punched holes to the outside for insect control. Our boxes have the smooth punched holes to the outside for appearance and cleaning convenience.

Please note we have taken a few steps away from the original authenticity so as to provide you with a wide selection of breadboxes from which to choose. For example, we offer some copper panels, yet copper sheet goods were not available at the time. We offer it because the antique copper provides a certain charm to today’s modern home.

We bench-build and finish these bread boxes in our Wisconsin shop using all native solid wood. They are smoothly finished with strong, neat joinery, yet are fitted and shaped to reflect the work and tooling of a country craftsman of the late 18th century.

   • All joints are glued and nailed with no exposed nail holes
   • The door frame is lap jointed for strength, and the doorknob is mortised into the
    frame
   • The hinges are solid antiqued brass
   • Outside dimensions are 16 3/4" wide x 9 3/4" high x 8 3/4" deep
   • The copper and pewter panels are finished with a flat, clear acrylic. The rustic
panels have a true rusted finish
   • The wood has a final coat of clear, flat lacquer for durability (exception: walnut and
oak are finished with linseed oil)

Our breadboxes are finished to complement many styles of home decor, including primitive, country, colonial, vintage, cottage, rustic and lodge decor.

Place one of these beautiful bread boxes in your home and let it take you back to a time when life was simpler. Your breadbox will become an interesting conversational piece as well as practical for storage.
